You know when you start a project and then never seem to finish it? Well this is one of those times. I started working on the project about 6-8 months ago after the idea was suggested to me by a friend. The idea was to create website aggregating all local shows for local bands in the area. However, I wanted it to be a bit more dynamic and work on a national (or possibly global) scale.

So now I’ve finally gotten it to the point that I feel is relatively stable. It’s still got some bugs (but thats why its beta, right?) and niggly little issues, but it’s pretty solid on the whole.

I’m currently working on some type of facebook app/integration and scraper to pull more shows automatically. Still, it’s such a grand scale, it can be a bit daunting.

Check it out, let me know what you think.

Introduction – the problem

Once every while, you encounter a website, which has interesting stuff available to you as a registered user only. No big deal, you just create an account and there you go. However, over time, the many, many user accounts with their passwords become hard to remember. You’ll just forget the cleverly crafted variation eventually, to find you struggeling again with yet another “forgot password” service variation.

A common solution is to have just one password for all of those sites, which are considered of low to medium risk if broken into. The problem with this is, that a rogue site owner might go out and impersonate as you, once they find out about other sites you may hang out with the same account. A little “social engineering”, and you can be in big trouble.

The solution

Now there is nothing wrong with a single, strong password, as long as it is not used literally. Enter the concept of a Master Password that generates a strong password, unique for every web site where it is used.

How it works

The password generator takes your master password and combines it with the domain name using the SHA1 algorithm created by the NSA. The, for added security certain letters are converted to uppercase

Credits

So we have all been at the point where we are registered on seemingly millions of sites, and instead of using strong passwords like we should, we get lazy and don’t. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about.

I use a Greasemonkey script (found here) called Password Composer (you can read all about it on that link). Now, this script is an absolute godsend really. But there are some shortcomings..sortof. Not with the script itself, but more with the convenience and implementation. For example, I use my mac regularly, so its totally cool to be running Greasemonkey and my custom hacks. But what about the times I need to quickly check my mail on a random work computer? or the library? or any public computer??

I pop open Firefox and go to login to my email… Then I remember that my email is conveniently locked down by an MD5 encrypted master password to keep me idiots out.

I setup a web based form for these dire times. Check it out here.

You can get the offline version here.
